Abstract |
A goal of Service Learning is to engage students in projects that serve the community and build their social and academic capacities. This project connects our curriculum to an identified community need. To help second graders become more aware of the larger world beyond their immediate surroundings and understand that the definition of a good citizen goes beyond the classroom, students were asked to bring powdered milk to donate to a local child care center. Then they wrote a class letter and sent a class picture. In response, the children from the center sent letters and a picture. This authentic experience created a human connection between our students and children of the child care center. |
