5th Grade Project

Abstract

The fifth grade social studies curriculum covers ancient civilizations for most of the year. We begin with a unit on archeologists including how they uncover facts from the past. Students learn that records are very useful in understanding what the ancient civilizations were like.

Fifth graders use this knowledge to record facts about life in Brazil by interviewing the elderly at the nursing home across the street from our school. They work in groups to; come up with thoughtful questions about what life was like when these adults were young, interview the adults at the nursing home, and complete a written piece in both English and Portuguese. The written memories in Portuguese are left at the nursing home for the participants and visitors to enjoy, and the English version is kept here at school for our students to enjoy.
