Students
The faculty of the Escola Americana includes a
diverse group of professional educators comprising approximately 100
teachers and administrators. All hold baccalaureate or equivalent
degrees, and 70% hold advanced degrees, including 70 master’s and 2
doctorates. All hold appropriate teaching certification. The teaching
faculty is complemented by a core of specialists in English as a Second
Language, counselors in all divisions, learning specialists, a school
psychologist, and a college counselor.
The administration includes a Headmaster, Director of
Brazilian Studies, Principals for the Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools,
a Business Manager, a Director of Admissions, a Director of Technology,
a Director of Student Activities, a Director of Athletics, a Director
of Student Services, and an International Baccalaureate
Coordinator.
Escola Americana is strongly committed to a faculty development program
that builds on teachers’ prior academic training and professional
experience. Teachers attend national and international workshops,
conferences, and university programs that are designed to enhance their
understanding of the teaching/learning dynamic and their stewardship of
young people.
During 2007-08 school year EARJ enrolled approximately 720 boys and
girls in its three divisions, 320 in the Lower School (Pre-K to 5th
grades), 172 in the Middle School, and 218 in the Upper School. The
school is committed to providing close interaction between teachers and
students hence enrollment is limited to approximately 20 students per
classroom. About 15% of the students are U.S. citizens; 60%, Brazilian
nationals; and 25%, citizens of over 40 different countries.
