LS Toy Drive BAKE SALE - 3rd grade
As many of you know, Community Service is integral to student learning at Escola Americana from the earliest grades through Upper School. For many years at this time of the school year, our LS students have contributed to a Christmas Toy Drive. Beginning last year, we tried something different: instead of asking students to bring in gifts from home, we raised money to buy gifts through weekly bake sales at school. It was a great success and so we would like to do it again this year! Every Wednesday, from now to December, each grade level will run ONE bake sale. On your child’s week for the Bake Sale, we request that you send a (labeled) tray of healthy baked goods/snacks to school. As we are trying to reinforce students’ healthy eating habits, we ask you NOT to send super sweet items such as brigadeiros or candy. We encourage you to give your child a few REAIS each Wednesday to purchase a treat. Money raised will be used to purchase gifts for children in day care centers/creches that we sponsor - appropriate for specific age ranges. Our LS students will wrap gifts, make cards, and some will help to deliver them. We believe this process provides a more personal, meaningful and richer learning experience for our students. With our efforts, we bring the spirit of the season to hundreds of children. We thank you in advance for supporting this community outreach initiative. Warm regards, Julie Hunt LS Principal

Friendship Festival
EARJ participates at the Annual Friendship Festival which takes place on the last week of May at a camp called Nosso Recanto (NR2). The sports offered are Basketball, Soccer and Volleyball in which boys and girls up to 15 years of age can participate. There are six schools involved: OLM and EARJ from Rio, School of Nations from Brasília, Colégio Rio Branco from São Paulo, American School of Santos and ASA from Paraguay. Some cultural, recreational and integration activities are also offered. The philosophy of the Festival is to include everyone and the emphasis is in participating rather than winning. We feel participation in this festival is especially important for our students who practiced for Little 8 teams but did not have a chance to travel.
