Reading is the most important learning activity of children in first grade. We spend a lot of time reading in groups, individually, aloud and silently. First graders love to be read to and enjoy demonstrating their new reading skills by reading to others. Mathematical abilities are shaped and developed through games and activities which encourage both problem solving and cooperation. In science, the children work together to investigate what the earth is like. We not only learn about ourselves but we also learn about others. Learning to be a good friend, working together in a group, practicing positive problem solving skills and taking responsibility for one’s own learning are all life skills that are an integral part of first grade. The First Grade Community has enjoyed participating in many special activities such as a Job Fair, an exchange of peace doves, a Snowflake Party, 100 Days Celebration, a Valentine’s Day Celebration and our Portfolio Sharing Day. In first grade, we build on small successes with each child progressing at his/her own individual rate. Maintaining each child’s self-esteem and building a secure foundation for future growth is a top priority in first grade. Want to see funny links? Click Here to see what we found to you. |
