Eating in space - movie Have you ever thought about life in space ? Think about the ordinary activities, one takes for granted, such as eating and drinking. Click on the link above and watch real live footage taken from the Columbia space shuttle before the fatal accident.
Mission Specialist Laurel Clark has lunch aboard Space Shuttle Columbia. First she opens a pouch of heated vegetable soup and takes a bite, then opens a vacuum-sealed package of tortillas.

Waste control in space - movie Commander Rick Husband leads a video tour of Space Shuttle Columbia's middeck, including the galley, the printer and the Waste Control System, or WCS, which is the onboard bathroom.

Exploration Cosmic Quest In this phase you will explore the web site Cosmic Quest to gather notes on Astronomers, the Sun, and the nine planets. Start with the Field Guide to the Universe. Read about four astronomers, the sun, and the planets of our solar system
Make sure to save your notes and observations (30 pts). You will also be using them later in the explanation portion of this activity as a journal entry material.
Experience lift off then design a space station. At the end of this activity you will earn 3 certificates of participation. The certificates are for:"Mission Specialist", "Pilot" ,and "Commander." Be sure to keep your certificates (cut and paste them into your journal). Sign the certificates before handing it in with your journal.

Explanation
Now, using the notes you have gathered with the exploration phase above you will write some Journals. (80 pts) Journal One: Astronaut Training
You will use the link provided above, Space Station, to get the same training astronauts take to go to space. You will use the information necessary to get your certificates to answer the following question: What fact/information is necessary to train a: a) Mission specialist b) Pilot c) Commander Attach the three certificates to this journal.
Journal Two:The Astronomers:
You will use the astronomers link found in the field guide to the universe to gather information about four astronomers of your choice and paraphrase the information about their lives. You must also briefly explain each scientist’s main ideas that led them to make it to history. Select one astronomer from the Ancient Era, one from either Medieval/Renaissance, one from the Age of Enlightenment, and last but not least, choose one astronomer from either the Modern or Today’s Era
Journal Three:The Sun
You will use information about the Sun found in the Field Guide to the Universe link above to explain how the sun gets the energy it uses to burn, describe two surface solar features and why they form on the surface of the sun, and state the type of star the sun is and how you predict the sun will end its life.
Journal Four: The Nine Planets
You will use information found in the Field Guide to the Universe link found above to write about the nine planets: Locate each planet in relation to its position from the sun. Describe five physical features of each planet i.e.; rotation period, revolution period, number of moons, characteristics that help distinguish that planet and etc. List two chemical characteristics of each planet i.e.; chemical composition of the atmosphere or chemical composition of the planet.

Take Action
Rubrics for a postcard from a planet of your choice Create a postcard, using Microsoft Publisher, about a planet. The teacher will select randomly each planet for each student. Use the information you gathered as you were doing your journal. Your postcard should include three reasons why someone should visit this planet, and three concerns/advices for safety in that planet. In your explanations you should refer to three features of the planet. REMEMBER: Postcards are photos of the place you visited. The written part is placed on the back side. BE CREATIVE! Make your planet attractive!You want to attract visitors! (20 pts)
