Angela Gélio,

French Portuguese for Foreigners Intermediate Level

Ms. Angela Gelio was born in Rio de Janeiro. She obtained her BA in Portuguese and French teaching at UFRJ in Rio de Janeiro, where she also worked as a Foreign Language Methodology teacher for two years (2006-2007). Her job consisted of teaching didactics and teaching skills for future UFRJ graduates. In addition, she monitored student teachers, actively supervising their activities and performances.

In 1994, Ms. Angela went to France in order to pursue her studies at the University of Toulouse – Le Mirail. Concurrently, she was invited to teach Portuguese to French students and to participate in other activities related to teaching.

In 1996, she returned to Brazil and started working at the Canadian Consulate and at the same time she taught at Aliança Francesa in Rio de Janeiro.   

From 2006 until June 2008, Ms. Angela taught at the Middle School level at the British School. She enjoys this age group and the enthusiasm they have for learning. In her free time Ms. Angela likes to paint. She also enjoys playing the tambourine, going to the cinema, and also traveling.

Luiza Maia, 

English as a Second Language Specialist

Luiza Maia was born in Curitiba, in the State of Paraná, Brazil. She has lived in the United States of America, in Japan, in South Africa and in Rio de Janeiro.  She did most of her studies in Brazil: she graduated from UERJ with a degree in English; she also has a degree in Education from Notre Dame College in Rio de Janeiro.  Ms. Luiza has a Master’s in Applied Linguistics from the University of Southern California, USA, and she has also studied for a Ph.D. in Education, at the same American university, but she stopped at the beginning of her dissertation. Before she came to EARJ, she worked at other international schools in Rio and abroad; she also worked at language institutes.  She has been a language teacher in Middle and High schools as well as in colleges; she has also been an elementary teacher for a good part of her career.Ms. Luiza is in her sixth year here at the EARJ as an ESL specialist at the Middle and Upper schools. She said that she has chosen teaching ESL because English is her second language too and because she has always enjoyed being a teacher. Ms. Luiza also helps teachers to learn more about ESL and Differentiated Instruction; and she is part of the teachers’ social committee.

Teaching is not the only thing that Ms. Luiza does in her life. She likes to watch movies and she enjoys reading, but her favorite activity is traveling. Ms. Luiza wants all parents and students to know that “Speaking several languages and learning about other cultures is very important to make the world a friendlier place.”

Mariana Valim, Spanish

Portuguese for Foreigners

Beginning Level

Ms. Mariana Valim was born in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, and has lived in the city her whole life. She studied at Rio de Janeiro State University (UERJ), where she earned her degree in Spanish and Portuguese Language and Literature. Currently, Ms. Mariana is working on her Masters in Spanish Literature at UFF and is planning to complete her doctorate in Comparative Literature. Before she came to teach at EARJ, Ms. Mariana taught Spanish for children for four years.

Ms. Mariana believes that learning a new language is a very important step in beginning to understand and respect other cultures. She loves working with children and young people and brings her enthusiasm into the classroom.

In her free time Ms. Mariana loves to go to the movies, read, dance at samba schools, and spend time with loved one.  She loves art, music, literature, and making new friends. The last which she hopes to do while working at EARJ.

Monica Lucas,

Spanish & Portuguese
Ms. Monica dos Anjos Lucas, the middle school Spanish teacher, was born in Rio de Janeiro, but nowadays lives in Niterói. She studied at a college called UFF where she earned her bachelor’s degree of Portuguese, Spanish language and literature. She has a master’s degree and a specialization in Spanish as a Second Language. Before coming to EARJ she taught at four other schools.

Ms. Monica has been at EARJ for six years. She would like parents and students to know that she loves to work with our adolescents and that her class is challenging, but not hard. In the classroom she speaks a lot of Spanish with her students and teaches them how to develop skills to discuss and understand the world that we live in. She is involved with leadership conference and her Thursday activity is the Middle School Headline News.

Outside of school Ms. Monica enjoys gardening, crocheting, reading, dancing and being with her family.

Valdir Chagas,

French & Portuguese
Valdir Chagas, also known as Mr. Chagas, is the middle school French and Portuguese for foreigners teacher. Mr. Chagas is considered to be a fun teacher by all of his students because he makes his subjects a lot better to learn. Mr. Chagas was born in Rio de Janeiro, but has lived in São Paulo, Londrina and Montpellier, France. He went to college at UFRJ and UFF in Rio, and Montpellier in France. He is currently working on his PhD in Comparative Literature. Before coming to EARJ, he worked for a university in Paraná.

Mr. Chagas has worked at EARJ for nine years as a French teacher. He teaches French because he loves languages and other countries, diversity and culture. In Mr. Chagas’ classes you have to try to focus on oral skills and have fun, if possible. Mr. Chagas is involved in the leadership conferences and his
Thursday activity is the chess club.

Mr. Chagas’ hobbies are photography and reading. He is married to an
American teacher from EARJ and they have a 9-month-old daughter called,
Sofia. This is a little about Valdir Chagas. I hope you enjoyed getting to know him a little better.
