Activities
| Extra-curricular Activities |
The Escola Americana provides a wide range of extracurricular activities designed to appeal to a variety of student interests and talents. Students are strongly encouraged to participate in activities which interest them and to attend and support other school activities. A discussion of some of the major activities follows. A complete list of current activities is available from the Activities Office. Students who wish to start a new club or activity are encouraged to do so and should consult with the Activities Director about the proper procedure to follow. |
Student Government |
EARJ provides ample opportunity for student government. There is a very active Student Council (STUCO), consisting of both elected and honorary (voluntary) members. It is the function of STUCO to propose and carry out improvements in all areas of school life, coordinate and oversee extracurricular activities, and participate in changes in school policy. Elected class officers work with the STUCO on school-wide matters and with their classmates on class matters and activities. Any student interested in becoming involved in STUCO should speak with the STUCO Advisor about meeting the criteria for membership. |
National Honor Society |
The purpose of EA's Guanabara Chapter of the National Honor Society is to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character in students at EARJ. Membership is based on demonstrated excellence in these areas. New members are chosen and inducted during the second semester of each school year according to the procedures outlined in the National Honor Society Handbook. All students who meet the minimum academic standard are considered candidates. A Faculty Council, made up of five faculty members appointed by the Upper School Principal, evaluates the extracurricular, service, and leadership activities record of each candidate. In addition, all faculty and current NHS members are asked to provide ratings that assess the candidates' character, leadership, and service. Based on student records and the ratings from faculty and NHS members, the committee selects new members. |
Athletics |
EARJ is proud of its competitive sports program. Each semester, several varsity teams compete in the Rio League against local schools and clubs, as well as against other American schools in Brazil. The highlight of the inter-school sports program is the Big Four Tournament, held each semester with American schools in Sao Paulo and Brasilia and alternating among the three cities. In addition, various intramural teams are formed and compete with each other throughout the year. All athletic activities are under the supervision of the Physical Education Department. Students wishing to participate in an athletic activity should be aware of and committed to the team's or activity's practice schedule, travel arrangements, housing requirements, and rules and regulations. Written explanations of all such matters will be distributed by the coach to all participants at the beginning of an activity or season. |
Model United Nations |
EA has a very strong Model United Nations organization which prepares for and participates in The Hague International Model United Nations each January and Brazil MUN (hosted by EARJ) in March. |
Publications |
Students publish the school yearbook, The Carioca. In addition, a school-wide (Preschool - 12th) news magazine, "The Panther Pause", is published five times per year. Included in each edition is information about upcoming events, school policy, and other areas of concern to the school community along with articles and art work submitted by students, staff, and parents. Two upper school student publications include "O/Binoculo" (in Portuguese) and the "Tatui" (in English). For information on advertising in one of these publications contact Katia.Veiga@earj.com.br. |
Music |
EARJ has a fine instrumental and choral music program. Both EARJ groups perform several times a year in the auditorium or on the Tartan. International Music festivals are hosted by different schools throughout South America yearly. The EARJ Band has also toured Europe in the past. |
Drama |
EA has a new drama program and a new Drama Coach. Plans include two performances this year (one each semester) with expansion of drama in the future. |
