A CULTURE OF KINDNESS, EMPATHY AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
From the earliest years, action is embedded in learning. In the Primary Years Programme (PYP), students are inspired to take meaningful, student-led action based on their inquiries—whether through kindness, creativity, or community involvement. In the Middle Years Programme (MYP), Service as Action empowers students to apply what they’ve learned to real-world challenges through collaborative projects, fostering empathy, responsibility, and perseverance. In the Diploma Programme (DP), Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) invites students to explore their passions, engage in experiential learning, and reflect on their contributions to the world. Across all divisions, students are supported to turn learning into action—developing into compassionate, engaged citizens ready to make a difference.
In the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP), action is a mindset. We believe that learning should lead to doing and that students of all ages have the power to make a difference in their communities and beyond. In our PYP learning environment, every Unit of Inquiry is thoughtfully designed to connect students with meaningful, real-world issues. As students explore central ideas and key concepts, they are inspired to take informed, responsible, and thoughtful action. This action may be big or small, individual or collaborative, but it is always student-initiated and rooted in learning. Every unit across all grade levels includes opportunities for students to take action based on what they have learned. Whether students are exploring how systems work, understanding their rights and responsibilities, or investigating how the world changes over time, they are encouraged to reflect and ask: What can I do with this knowledge to give back to the community?
Service as action (SA) is a core component of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP). Its goal is to cultivate compassionate individuals who take initiative to positively impact both the lives of others and the surrounding environment. In the Middle School, students have the opportunity to take part in at least one SA activity every semester with weekly meetings every Thursday during advisory. These activities include a wide range of interests and abilities, from gardening and composting to joining the SOS student group to help plan our traditional Walkathon Against Cancer. Through service action initiatives, students develop character in a holistic manner, building on the lessons learned in the academic classrooms. Some outcomes of the SA program are: raising awareness, working collaboratively, developing perseverance and commitment to others.
"Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) is a core component of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) that encourages students to engage in experiential learning beyond the classroom. It is designed to foster personal growth, develop critical thinking, and inspire meaningful contributions to local and global communities. Through CAS, students undertake projects and activities that challenge them to explore their interests, develop new skills, and reflect on their experiences, all while balancing creativity, physical activity, and community service. CAS helps students become compassionate, active citizens who are equipped with the skills and mindset needed to make a positive impact in the world. It bridges academic learning with real-world applications, preparing students for success both during and after the DP."
